Mulching - What is it and why is it such a good thing?

Mulching is the practice of covering and protecting bare soil around trees and plants.
The usual material used is shredded tree bark or wood chips, although other alternatives are available.

Mulching performs a number of useful functions to the gardener.

It retains moisture in the soil by reducing evapouration which saves repeated watering especially during the summer months.
This also gives the plans a better chance to absorb nutrients from the soil.
The mulch itself does not absorb water, so all water passes strainght through into the soil.

The layer of bark prevents the seeds from unwanted weeds getting to the soil and germinating, and so reduces weeds.
